A daylong Basanta Utsab (spring festival) was held at Mal Chattar on Dhaka University campus on 15.03.2016.
Monalisa Women’s Club, run by the leading business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, sponsored the event while Dhaka University Cultural Society (DUCS) organized it.
Sayeed Khokon, the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, inaugurated the festival around 10:30 am while DU Vice- Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique chaired the programme.
The daylong event featured drama, puppet show and musical show, including folk , Gambhira, Bhatiali, Bhawaira, Jari and recitation of Puthi. Over 100 DU students performed at the programme. DU student and also Band Arjan’s vocalist Lalon Mahmud performed some popular folk songs in the afternoon . Later, prominent singer Kiran Chandra Roy, Bappa Mazumder and band joler Gaan sang their popular songs at the stage.
The entire Mal Chattar area of the university was adorned with colorful banners and festoons presenting Bengali culture. Some makeshift stalls of traditional Fuska, Hawae Mithai, Nagordola, Bioscope, Mehedi corner and Bashundhara Women’s Club were set up at the corner of the main stage.
Speaking at the inaugural session, DU VC Prof Arefin Siddique said the young generation of the country should remember that rich cultural unity of the Bengali people was the main spirit behind the country’s independence.
“The Language movement of 1952 is the vital example of strong cultural bond of the nation, ” he added.
In his speech, cultural personality Ali Zaker said the season-based festivals in the country can help build a non-communal state by bringing people of all religions under a single banner.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General liaquat Ali Lucky thanked Dhaka University Cultural Society for arranging such type of event and said the academy will always extend its supports to DU students in the field of culture. Among others, DUCS moderator Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury, Salim Ullah Salim, brand head of Bashundhara Paper Mill, DUCS president Owasek Sajjad and General Secretary Ahsan Rony. It may be mentioned that Monalisa Women’s Club is sponsoring various programmes to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene care.
